Cloth Placemat (Grandma II)
2009
Watercolor and ink on hand stitched table cloths
15" x 17"
Cloth placemats serve a dual purpose of keeping food off the table, and offering a decorative and difficult to maintain element to the place setting. In this series, placemats inherited from my partner's mother were used to depict stained images of my own grandmother. By relieving the placemat of its domestic duties, I hoped to commemorate the women who put hours of labor into the formalities of dinner.
